Most television beds announce themselves. This one does not. The Onda's footboard curves over in one soft roll - onda is Italian for wave - and the television lies flat inside it, out of sight, until you press the remote and it rises. Press it again and the curve closes over the top of it, and the room goes back to being a bedroom rather than a media wall with a mattress in front of it.

The lift is motorised and remote-controlled, built for screens up to 55 inches and 40kg, and it moves slowly enough not to wake whoever fell asleep during the second episode. The mechanism, the power feed and the cable run all sit inside the frame. Nothing is bracketed to the wall, nothing trails across the carpet, and there is no black box on a stand in the corner collecting dust.

The curve is the difficult part

A flat footboard is a panel. A curved one is a shape, and it has to be built rather than cut. The roll is formed over a hardwood frame and then upholstered so the channel tufting holds its spacing all the way round the bend instead of bunching at the tightest point. It takes longer to make, and it is the reason the Onda reads soft from the doorway while still housing a lift mechanism inside it.

The headboard is the counterweight: tall, square-shouldered, with the vertical channels set inside a plain border so the panel appears to float rather than run off the edges. In the soft mink velvet shown here, the whole thing settles into a pale room instead of dominating it. That is the Italian half of the brief - sprezzatura, the habit of making a considered thing look effortless - and the Yorkshire half is what holds it up. Every Onda is hand-finished in our Liversedge workshop, panel by panel.

Under the fabric is a hardwood frame, not softwood dressed up to look sturdy. That matters more on a television bed than an ordinary one, because a moving mechanism puts load through the footboard every day of its life. The channel foam is stacked in vertical sections from the base up rather than stitched into a flat pad, so the ribbing still holds its shape after a year of elbows and pillow stacks.

The Onda is upholstered to order in any of our 15+ designer fabrics, from a soft Coniston weave to a deep crushed velvet. The mink velvet shown here is the quietest of them, and the one that makes the curve read as a curve rather than an outline. Order a free fabric swatch before you decide - a screen will not tell you how a velvet takes light at 7am, which is why we send swatches before you spend a penny.

If the Onda is close but not quite

The Aureo hides the same class of lift inside the headboard instead of the footboard, which suits a room where the bed faces a window rather than a wall, and both sit in the wider television bed collection.
