There is not a straight line on the headboard. It rises, dips, swells and comes back down, the way a dune does - and for the same reason, which is that nothing which shaped it moved in a straight line either. No tufting, no buttons, no trim, no seams doing decorative work. Just one continuous sculpted form in cream boucle, and a television that rises out of the footboard on a remote and disappears when you are done with it.

The lift is motorised and remote-controlled, built for screens up to 55 inches and 40kg, with the mechanism, power feed and cabling routed inside the frame. No bracket in the plasterboard, no cable down the wall, no stand in the corner.

The plainest bed here is not the cheapest, and here is why

Fabric wants to lie flat. Every channel, button and seam on our other beds is, among other things, a way of giving fabric somewhere to go. Take all of them away and put the fabric over a compound curve instead - one that bends in two directions at once across the top of the headboard - and it has nowhere to go but into wrinkles, unless someone works it into shape by hand and holds the tension even the whole way round.

Boucle makes that harder still. A looped weave shows every uneven pull as a visible ripple in the loops, where a flat velvet would forgive it. So this is a slow bed to build despite looking like the simplest thing in the range, and it is priced for the hours rather than for the number of features you can count on it.

The form itself is the most Italian thing we make. Post-war Milanese furniture spent thirty years arguing that a soft moulded shape could be more serious than a carved one, and it won that argument. The Duna borrows the conclusion and builds it over a hardwood frame in our Liversedge workshop - which matters more on a television bed than an ordinary one, because a moving mechanism puts load through the footboard every day of its life.

The footboard is deliberately the opposite: a plain squared volume, no shaping at all, so it does not compete with the headboard and the eye has somewhere to rest. It is the quiet half of a bed that only says one thing, but says it properly.

Choosing your fabric

The Duna is upholstered to order in any of our 15+ designer fabrics. Cream boucle is shown here and is the version the shape was drawn around - the loops catch light across the curve and show you where the form turns, which a flat weave simply does not do. In a smooth velvet the same headboard becomes sleeker and considerably more formal. The questions people actually ask

• What size television fits? The lift takes screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. The television is not included - the mechanism, the mounting bracket and the internal cable routing are.
• Why does a bed with no decoration cost more than a channel-tufted one? Because upholstering a compound curve by hand takes longer than upholstering a flat panel, and boucle takes longer than velvet. You are paying for workshop hours, not for the number of features on the spec sheet.
• How long does it take? Every Duna is made to order in Liversedge, so please allow 15-30 business days from order to delivery.
• Where do you deliver? Free delivery to mainland UK addresses (England, Wales and mainland Scotland), kerbside as standard. White Glove delivery to your room of choice is available as a paid upgrade at checkout.
