Why We Send Free Swatches Before You Spend a Penny

The single biggest reason people don't buy furniture online is that they can't touch it first. So we send you the fabric instead.

Belsogno sends a free fabric swatch pack to any UK mainland address before you order, because touch is the one thing a product page cannot deliver — and because a customer who has held the cloth in their own bedroom light orders once, orders confidently, and keeps the bed for a decade. This is the story of why that policy exists, what it costs us, and why we'd make the same decision again tomorrow.

The problem nobody in furniture likes to admit

Consumer research has been saying the same thing for years: when shoppers are asked what they dislike most about buying online, the inability to see and handle the product in person comes out at or near the top of every survey — in one large US study, 44% of shoppers named it their single biggest frustration, and studies of furniture buyers specifically have found around two-thirds feel uncertain committing to a piece they've never touched. That uncertainty is rational. A bed is not a phone case. You will lean against this fabric with a book at eleven o'clock at night, run your hand over it while you make the bed, live beside it for years. Expecting someone to judge all of that from a compressed photograph on a phone screen — where the same charcoal velvet can render grey, brown or nearly blue depending on the handset — has always struck us as asking for an act of faith the customer shouldn't have to make.

Why a photograph can't tell the truth about cloth

We photograph our fabrics as honestly as we can, and it still isn't enough, for reasons that are physics rather than effort. Pile fabrics like velvet and chenille change colour with the direction of the light and the angle of your eye — that's the nap doing its job, and no static image can show it. Texture is worse: a bouclé's looped weave and a flat linen can photograph almost identically at product-page resolution, yet feel like different materials entirely under your hand. And every bedroom's light is its own: the fabric that glows in our studio may sulk under a north-facing window in Leeds. The Italians have a phrase for the only test that settles it — toccare con mano, to touch with your own hand. There is no digital substitute, so we stopped pretending there was.

Why free — the honest answer

Here's the part most retailers won't say out loud: free swatches are good business, and we'd rather tell you why than dress it up as pure generosity. Every Belsogno bed is made to order in our Yorkshire workshop in Liversedge — your fabric is cut when you commit, not pulled from a warehouse shelf. That model only works when customers choose right the first time. A swatch pack that costs us a few pounds to post prevents the far more expensive outcome for everyone: a finished, hand-upholstered bed that arrives in a colour the customer's room disagrees with. Some retailers charge for samples or cap you at three or four; we think putting a price on certainty, on a purchase this size, sends exactly the wrong message. The swatch is where trust starts — it's the first physical thing of ours you'll ever hold, and it arrives before you've spent a penny.

What's in the pack

Choose from our fifteen-plus designer fabrics and colourways — plush velvets, soft chenilles, textured bouclés, linen-look weaves, including stain-resistant options for family bedrooms — and we'll post your chosen swatches to your door, free, anywhere on the UK mainland. These are cuttings from the same rolls our upholsterers work with, not printed colour cards, so what you feel is precisely what your bed will be. Request them through the fabric samples page or ask our team and we'll sort it while you're deciding on frames.

What to do when they arrive

Don't judge them on the doormat. Take the swatches to the bedroom and look at them twice: once in daylight, once at night under the lamps you actually read by — fabric lives its whole life in that second kind of light. Hold each one against your curtains, your carpet, the wall behind where the headboard will stand. Drape it over the back of your hand rather than pinching it; that's how it will meet your skin. Most people find the decision makes itself inside two evenings — and because every bed is made to order over two to three weeks, those evenings cost you nothing on the calendar. If you're weighing up the frame as well as the fabric, our guide to choosing an ottoman bed frame and our piece on building a hotel-style bedroom in a small space are good companions to a handful of swatches.

Quick answers about our swatch service

Are Belsogno fabric swatches really free? Yes — the swatches and the postage, to any UK mainland address, with no obligation to order.

How do I request a swatch pack? Order directly through our fabric samples page, or contact the team by phone, email or the message form and tell us which fabrics and colours you'd like to see.

Are the swatches the actual bed fabric? Yes — they're cut from the same upholstery rolls used in our Yorkshire workshop, so colour, weight and texture are exactly what your finished bed will carry.

How long do swatches take to arrive? A few days by post — comfortably inside the two-to-three-week made-to-order lead time, so sampling first rarely delays your bed at all.

Touch first, decide second

We started Belsogno with a simple conviction: British craftsmanship and Italian design sensibility deserve better than a leap of faith at checkout — you can read that story in where our Anglo-Italian beds come from. The swatch pack is that conviction in an envelope. Request your swatch pack today, live with the cloth for an evening or two, and order your bed the way it should be ordered — with your fingertips already certain. And if you'd like help narrowing the shortlist, message our team — we talk fabric all day and haven't tired of it yet.
