A frame does not decorate a painting. It tells your eye where to stop. That is the entire idea behind this bed: a tall panel of ivory velvet, channelled floor to top, held inside one thin line of brushed gold - and the same line repeated around the footboard, behind which a television waits, flat and out of sight, until you press the remote.

The lift is motorised and remote-controlled, built for screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. The mechanism, the power feed and the cabling all sit inside the frame, so nothing interrupts the panel: no bracket in the plasterboard, no cable down the wall, no stand in the corner.

Why a pale bed needs a line

Ivory is the hardest colour to get right in a bedroom, because most bedrooms are already pale. Put a cream headboard against a cream wall and it dissolves - you lose the shape you paid for, and the room reads flat rather than calm. The gold border is what stops that happening. It gives the panel an edge, so the tufting reads as depth instead of texture, and the bed holds its outline in daylight as well as under a lamp.

Cornice is simply the Italian word for a picture frame, and the thinking is the same one a Florentine framer applies: the frame should be the quietest thing in the room and still be the reason everything else works. Ours is a slim brushed inlay, mitred at each corner and set by hand in our Liversedge workshop - a rectangle in metal is unforgiving, because a corner that is half a degree out is visible from across the room.

Inside it, the channels are built the honest way: foam stacked in vertical sections from the base up, not stitching pressed into a flat pad, so the ribbing still holds its shape under an elbow or a stack of pillows a year in. Underneath is a hardwood frame, which matters more on a television bed than an ordinary one because a moving mechanism puts load through the footboard every day of its life.

The Cornice is upholstered to order in any of our 15+ designer fabrics. Ivory velvet is shown here and is the version the gold was chosen against - warm metal on a warm ivory, which is a narrower thing to get right than it looks, since a cool-toned white turns the same gold slightly green. This is the bed to order a free fabric swatch for above all the others: pale fabrics are the ones screens lie about most, which is why we send swatches before you spend a penny.

• What size television fits? The lift takes screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. The television is not included - the mechanism, the mounting bracket and the internal cable routing are.
• How long does it take? Every Cornice is made to order in Liversedge, so please allow 15-30 business days from order to delivery.
• Where do you deliver? Free delivery to mainland UK addresses (England, Wales and mainland Scotland), kerbside as standard. White Glove delivery to your room of choice is available as a paid upgrade at checkout.
• Is an ivory bed practical? More than its reputation suggests, provided you choose the fabric for it. A velvet or a tight weave in ivory sheds surface marks far better than a loose open weave in the same colour, and the channels break up any shading that does occur. Ask us for the pale-fabric recommendations when you order your swatches.
• Will it fit my room? Measure the clearance above the footboard as well as the floor space, because the screen needs headroom when it rises. Our size guide has the full run of UK bed dimensions.
