Look at the headboard for a moment and it seems to be two shades of the same colour. It is not. Every panel is cut from one bolt of sand velvet - the pattern comes from which way each one is turned. Lay velvet in opposite directions and the pile catches light in opposite directions with it, so the chevrons lift and recede on their own, without a second fabric anywhere on the bed. Then the television rises out of the footboard on a remote, and disappears again when you are finished with it.

The lift is motorised and remote-controlled, built for screens up to 55 inches and 40kg, with the mechanism, power feed and cabling routed inside the frame. No bracket in the plasterboard, no cable down the wall, no stand in the corner.

A pattern borrowed from the floor

A spiga is what an Italian joiner calls herringbone parquet - literally, like an ear of wheat - and it has been going into palazzo floors for four hundred years for a practical reason as much as a decorative one: a herringbone run makes a room read longer than it is, because the eye follows the zigzag rather than the wall. Stand it upright on a headboard and it does the same thing vertically. This is the bed that makes a ceiling feel higher without the headboard having to be enormous.

Getting it right is a cutting job before it is an upholstery one. Each panel is cut, padded and wrapped individually, then set so that every V meets cleanly at the centre line and the pile direction alternates correctly all the way up. One panel turned the wrong way is not a subtle error - it shows as a pale block in the middle of a dark row from across the room. It is set out and hand-finished in our Liversedge workshop, panel by panel, on a hardwood frame, which matters more on a television bed than an ordinary one because a moving mechanism puts load through the footboard every day of its life.

The footboard repeats the same chevrons and closes with a plain flat top over the screen housing, and the headboard sits inside a quiet border so the pattern reads as a panel rather than as wallpaper. There is no metal, no mirror, no buttoning and no contrast fabric. One bolt of velvet, turned.

Choosing your fabric

The Spiga is upholstered to order in any of our 15+ designer fabrics, but it is worth knowing that this design lives or dies on pile. A velvet gives you the full two-tone effect shown here; a flat weave with no pile gives you the chevron geometry in a single flat shade, which is a cleaner, more contemporary bed and a genuinely different one. Neither is wrong - but it is the difference between the bed in the photograph and something else entirely, so order a free fabric swatch and turn it over in your hand before you choose. The questions people actually ask

• Is the two-tone effect a second fabric? No. It is one fabric, with alternate panels turned so the pile runs the other way. That is why the shading shifts as you walk around the bed, and why it will always match itself perfectly.
• What size television fits? The lift takes screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. The television is not included - the mechanism, the mounting bracket and the internal cable routing are.
• Does the pattern make a small room feel busy? Less than you would expect, because it is all one colour. A chevron in two contrasting fabrics is busy; a chevron in one velvet is texture, and it draws the eye upward rather than across.
