There is a border around this headboard, and it is the same colour as everything else. No contrast fabric, no metal, no stitching - just a raised surround standing a few millimetres proud of the panel it encloses, so the only thing marking the edge is the shadow it casts. Walk past at ten in the morning and the line is barely there; switch a lamp on at ten at night and the whole panel gains an outline. Inside the footboard, framed the same way, a television rises on a remote and disappears when you are done with it.

The lift is motorised and remote-controlled, built for screens up to 55 inches and 40kg, with the mechanism, power feed and cabling routed inside the frame. No bracket in the plasterboard, no cable down the wall, no stand in the corner.

Definition without contrast

A plain bed in a soft colour has one weakness: it can lose its shape against a pale wall. Most of the market fixes that with something added - a metal trim, a darker border, a row of buttons. Each works, and each changes what the bed is: a trimmed bed is a formal bed, a two-tone bed is a graphic one.

Rilievo is the Italian word for relief, as in bassorilievo - the carving tradition where an entire scene exists inside a few millimetres of depth, and nothing is added to the stone at all. The same principle here: the frame is made by raising the surround, not by introducing anything new, so the bed gains an edge without gaining a second idea. It stays one colour, one fabric, one object.

Getting a few millimetres to read cleanly across a super king headboard is the difficult part. The surround has to sit at a consistent height the whole way round - a fractional dip on one side does not look like a mistake in the padding, it looks like the shadow has gone wrong, which is far more noticeable. It is built and set by hand in our Liversedge workshop over a hardwood frame, which matters more on a television bed than an ordinary one because a moving mechanism puts load through the footboard every day of its life.

The blush shown here is worth a word too. In a room of creams and warm whites a soft dusty pink does not read as a pink bedroom - it reads as a warm neutral, the same way terracotta does on a floor. It is a considerably more grown-up colour than its reputation, particularly in a matte textured weave rather than a shiny one.

Choosing your fabric

The Rilievo is upholstered to order in any of our 15+ designer fabrics, and because the whole design depends on shadow, texture matters more here than colour does. A matte weave or a chenille gives you a soft, readable edge; a high-sheen velvet fights it slightly, because the light bouncing off the pile competes with the shadow the border is trying to make. Order a free fabric swatch and look at it under a lamp rather than at a window - and if you are considering the blush, live with the sample for a few days first, because a colour on a screen is not a colour in your room.

The questions people actually ask

• Is the border a different fabric? No. It is the same fabric, raised slightly, so the line you can see is a shadow rather than a colour change. That is why it never looks like two materials that do not quite match.
• What size television fits? The lift takes screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. The television is not included - the mechanism, the mounting bracket and the internal cable routing are.
• Is a pink bed hard to decorate around? Less than most people assume, provided it is the only colour in the room. A dusty blush sits happily with cream, oatmeal, warm grey and natural wood - what it does not want is a second strong colour competing with it.
