Channel width changes a bed more than anything else you can do to it. Wide columns read as architecture. Narrow ones like these read as texture - closer to fluted glass or a reed bed than to a building - and they change what the headboard does in a room: instead of announcing itself, it catches light in dozens of fine vertical lines and softens the whole wall behind the bed. Inside the footboard, behind the same fluting, a television rises on a remote and disappears when you are done with it.

The lift is motorised and remote-controlled, built for screens up to 55 inches and 40kg, with the mechanism, power feed and cabling routed inside the frame. No bracket in the plasterboard, no cable down the wall, no stand in the corner.

More lines means more light, and less room for error

A fluted panel has roughly twice the number of channels of a standard one, which means twice the number of shadow lines per square metre. That is the whole reason it looks richer than a plain panel in the same fabric at the same price point - the depth comes from the count, not from the colour.

It also means twice as many chances to get it wrong. Each flute is its own padded section, foam stacked from the base up, and with this many sitting side by side any drift in the spacing is immediately visible, because the eye has a dozen neighbouring reference lines to compare against. On a wide-channel bed you can lose a millimetre. Here you cannot. Every one is set out and hand-finished in our Liversedge workshop, on a hardwood frame - which matters more on a television bed than an ordinary one, because a moving mechanism puts load through the footboard every day of its life.

Canneto is Italian for a reed bed, the kind that edges a Venetian lagoon, and the name is fairly literal: hundreds of fine vertical stems, all the same, all catching the light slightly differently. The headboard turns forward very slightly at each side, which is not a wingback so much as a suggestion of one - enough to frame the pillows and give the panel some depth against the wall, not enough to enclose the bed.

Dove grey velvet is shown here, and fine fluting is what makes a mid-grey worth having: on a flat panel the same shade can read as dull, while here the shadow lines give it a range from near-silver at the ridges to charcoal in the grooves, all from one fabric.

Choosing your fabric

The Canneto is upholstered to order in any of our 15+ designer fabrics, and this is a design that genuinely needs pile. A velvet or a soft chenille gives you the light-and-shadow range that makes fine fluting worth doing; a flat matte weave flattens the flutes into faint lines and you lose most of the effect. Order a free fabric swatch and hold it at an angle to a lamp before you decide - that is the test that tells you what this bed will look like, and it is exactly what our fabric guide is for.

The questions people actually ask

• What size television fits? The lift takes screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. The television is not included - the mechanism, the mounting bracket and the internal cable routing are.
• Is fine fluting harder to keep clean than wide channels? Marginally. The grooves are narrower, so a vacuum brush attachment run downward along the flutes is the way to do it rather than across. Dust does not settle in vertical channels the way it does in buttoning.
• Will the flutes flatten over time? Not if they are built properly. The foam is stacked in sections from the base up rather than stitched into a flat pad, which is what keeps each ridge standing under an elbow or a stack of pillows. A flat pad with lines sewn into it is the version that goes soft, and it is not what we make.
• How long does it take? Every Canneto is made to order in Liversedge, so please allow 15-30 business days from order to delivery.

If the Canneto is close but not quite

The Onda uses the same straight-channel language with fewer, wider channels and a rolled footboard curve. The Luminosa takes channels wall-height and sets gold between them, the Riflesso frames them in bevelled mirror, and the Aureo moves the lift into the headboard instead of the footboard.
