The channels start vertical at the centre of the headboard, then lean, then fan right over into the corner - the way a folding fan opens. There is no metal on this bed, no mirror, no contrast piping. The only thing doing any decorative work is the shape of the tufting itself, which is a harder way to make a bed interesting and a much quieter one to live with. Inside the footboard, behind the same fan, sits a television that rises on a remote and disappears again when the film ends.

The lift is motorised and remote-controlled, built for screens up to 55 inches and 40kg, with the mechanism, power feed and cabling routed inside the frame. Nothing bracketed to the wall, nothing trailing across the floor, no stand in the corner.

Everything depends on the pivot

A ventaglio is an Italian folding fan, and the thing that makes one work is not the ribs - it is the single pivot they all turn on. Same here. Every channel on this headboard is a different length and sits at a slightly different angle, and they all have to resolve to one point. Get the pivot wrong by a few millimetres and the fan looks like a mistake rather than a design.

So each channel is built as its own padded section, with the foam stacked from the base up rather than stitched into a flat pad, then set out from that convergence point by hand in our Liversedge workshop. It is why the fan still holds its shadow at eleven at night with one lamp on, instead of flattening into a printed-looking pattern - and why the ribbing keeps its shape under an elbow or a stack of pillows a year in.

Underneath is a hardwood frame, which matters more on a television bed than an ordinary one because a moving mechanism puts load through the footboard every day of its life. The footboard closes with a soft rolled top over the screen housing, so the geometry has one place to relax.

The taupe velvet shown here is the point of the whole thing. It is a colour that sits between warm and cool and therefore argues with almost nothing - it will still work when the walls change - and a short dense pile picks up the fan in light and shadow rather than needing colour or metal to explain it.

Choosing your fabric

The Ventaglio is upholstered to order in any of our 15+ designer fabrics. Taupe velvet is shown here and is the most forgiving choice, but the fan reads more sharply in a darker pile and almost disappears in a pale linen weave - three quite different beds from one frame. The questions people actually ask

• What size television fits? The lift takes screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. The television is not included - the mechanism, the mounting bracket and the internal cable routing are.
• How long does it take? Every Ventaglio is made to order in Liversedge, so please allow 15-30 business days from order to delivery.
• Where do you deliver? Free delivery to mainland UK addresses (England, Wales and mainland Scotland), kerbside as standard. White Glove delivery to your room of choice is available as a paid upgrade at checkout.
• Is fan tufting harder to keep clean than plain upholstery? Not meaningfully. The channels run vertically or diagonally, so dust does not settle in them the way it does in a buttoned or deep-buttoned headboard. A soft brush attachment along the channel direction is all it needs.
• Will it fit my room? Measure the clearance above the footboard as well as the floor space, because the screen needs headroom when it rises. Our size guide has the full run of UK bed dimensions.

If the Ventaglio is close but not quite

The Onda is quieter still - straight channels, one rolled curve, no fan.
