Black velvet in a bedroom is a decision, not a default. The Raggio commits to it and then gives the eye somewhere to go: a fan of upholstered rays opening across the headboard, each one separated by a line of brushed gold, so the whole panel reads as light spreading from a single point. The same fan repeats across the footboard - and inside that footboard sits a television, flat and invisible, until you press the remote and it rises.

The lift is motorised and remote-controlled, built for screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. Mechanism, power feed and cabling all run inside the frame, so the drama stays on the bed and not on the wall behind it: no bracket in the plasterboard, no cable down the skirting, no stand in the corner arguing with the headboard.

Setting out a fan is harder than setting out a line

Vertical channels are straightforward: parallel, evenly spaced, forgiving. A radiating fan is not. Every ray is a different length, every gold inlay meets its neighbours at a different angle, and the point they all converge on has to be exact or the whole panel looks like it slipped. Each ray is built and upholstered as its own padded section, then the inlay is set and aligned by hand in our Liversedge workshop, because metal shows every millimetre you get wrong.

This is Deco, and Deco was never only a Paris or a New York language. The Italian liners of the 1930s - the Rex, the Conte di Savoia - carried first-class interiors built from exactly this vocabulary: dark lacquer, radiating panels, thin lines of metal doing the work that carving used to do. The Raggio borrows that grammar and builds it in Yorkshire, over a hardwood frame, which matters more on a television bed than an ordinary one because a moving mechanism puts load through the footboard every day of its life.

The velvet is the other half of it. A short, dense pile takes light in two directions at once, so the rays darken and lift as you move around the bed rather than sitting flat, and the gold reads warm against it instead of brash. It is the reason this bed looks better at ten at night with one lamp on than it does in daylight.

Black velvet is shown here and is the version the design was drawn around - the gold needs a dark ground to read as gold rather than as beige. In a pale fabric the fan becomes subtle to the point of near-invisible, which some rooms want. • What size television fits? The lift takes screens up to 55 inches and 40kg. The television is not included - the mechanism, the mounting bracket and the internal cable routing are.
• How long does it take? Every Raggio is made to order in Liversedge, so please allow 15-30 business days from order to delivery.
• Where do you deliver? Free delivery to mainland UK addresses (England, Wales and mainland Scotland), kerbside as standard. White Glove delivery to your room of choice is available as a paid upgrade at checkout.
• Does black velvet make a small room feel smaller? Less than people expect. A dark headboard recedes rather than advances, which is why it is a standard trick in hotel rooms that are smaller than they look. What it does need is a light source near it - the gold has nothing to catch otherwise.
• Will it fit my room? Measure the clearance above the footboard as well as the floor space, because the screen needs headroom when it rises. Our size guide has the full run of UK bed dimensions.
